Our Persian Luv Bug Jujeh’s upper tooth is inflamed and causing discomfort when he eats. We took him to the Vet and they have him on antibiotics and pain medication. He has been on the medication for two weeks. Just got back from the Vet and the inflammation is not decreased. His blood work numbers are in the normal range with the exception of his white blood cells which are slightly below the normal range. The Vet is wanting to perform a biopsy along with pulling two teeth. We are majorly concerned putting him under because of his age (16.5 years) and a heart murmur. We are lost on what to do next to help him. Please help!! Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!

I am sorry for what is going on that brought you to TCS. Your cat apparently isn't going to get better without some additional help. A heart murmur doesn't have to preclude treatment. You can have his heart checked further first with an EKG/ECG to see what his risks are. There are sedatives/anesthesia options for elderly cats.

It the vet wants to not only remove some teeth but to do a biopsy, it sounds like they suspect cancer. Nonetheless, you can ask for a consult with a specialty group that includes cardiology, dental, oncology, among other specialists to work with your vet to come up with the best plan moving forward. That is what I would do if it were my cat. .

The blood work results are all in the normal range with the white blood cells slightly below normal. We are researching and reaching out frantically to see if there are other alternatives then pulling his teeth and performing a biopsy. We don't want to be in that 1.0% where the Vet did all they could during the teeth extraction.

Maybe I misunderstood but my vet from vca animal hospital discovered my cat needed a crown removed by xray. So I agree with FeebysOwner FeebysOwner
Find an oncology group
We are scared to put him through anesthesia for his teeth and him not waking up because of his heart murmur and his age. We understand medicine has advanced but there is always that slime chance that it will happen to us. Also, we read that if you do a biopsy, the area is prone to spread since you now have disturbed it. The research said not to touch it. We are caught between a rock and a hard place!!

The Vet is speculating that it might be cancer. She doesn't know w/o doing a biopsy. But the original blood work from a few weeks ago says otherwise. Sorry to add this after my last reply.

I'm adding. It is possible it could be cancer. I didn't want to scare you but you are a googler too!
I read an article about tooth resorption. No known cause. My vet said anesthesia and sedation are different. Don't remember how. It's possible she will be ok after the biopsy

I presume you are referring to the CBC portion of the blood work - Feeby has lymphoma and her CBC blood work shows nothing out of the ordinary. I am not sure the blood work can be considered a primary indicator as to whether or not cancer exists.

As I already said - maybe your best bet is to start with a specialty group that has a various array of specialists on staff - from dental to oncology - that way any testing, including what your vet has already done, can be shared among the specialists as needed.
