Hello, I have just found your forum and just in time! First I will introduce myself.. my husband and i live in Northern British Columbia Canada in a rural area with no neighbors for 1/2 mile either way. Lots of bush and fields in between our homes here, and i know all the neighbors on the road. I suspect someone has been dropping unwanted cats off here this fall, because suddenly we had 2 cats show up and they don't belong to anyone here. The one was a young one, very small, that I was unable to get anywhere near. I did manage to trap him when the weather turned really cold and snowy, and I took that one to the shelter and they have been working with him to see if they can get him to a point where he is adoptable. So far not much luck, so I think that one was beyond help. The other showed up right after i took the one to the shelter and at first I thought maybe it belonged to the new renters up the road. I fed it because the weather was so cold, and we eventually gave him a weatherized crate with blankets in it because we thought maybe he couldn't find his way back with all the snow we had gotten. I went to the new neighbors and they said it wasn't theirs, but I have my suspicions about the story they gave me. Either way, this fellow needed some help, and so into the wood shed he moved. He could come as go as he pleased and it took me a long time, but he finally would come down off the wood piles to be petted and ear scratched. But he still would disappear and be gone for a day or so, so i decided to track him to see where he was going and found out he was hanging out in a abandoned den under a log in the bush. But the other day he didn't come home to eat, and we had gotten well over a foot of snow, so I cleared a trail for him and he finally came back. He went into a smaller dog crate I had set up out there so i closed the door and moved him into a guest cabin where at least he would be warm. He was quite vocal about being trapped, and was making some pretty wild sounds and looked absolutely terrified. Once i got him in the cabin I put his litter box and his food and water, left the light on opened the crate door, and left him alone. That was last night, and this morning he is hiding under the bed and refuses to come out to visit me. He did make some non threatening noises, so i just sat in there and talked to him and then left him alone again. I have no experience with cats like this one, and my question is do you think he will come around me again, or stay under the bed never to trust me again? I worked so hard to get him to trust me, and now i'm afraid I may have broken that trust. I had no choice really, it is bitterly cold here, and we have had a snowfall warning for the last 2 days. So far we've had well over a foot and a half of snow, and it isn't supposed to stop until tonight sometime. I don't think Buddy (that's what I've been calling him) would have made it through this blast of winter. Any thoughts on this? Any advice on how to regain the trust? Anyone else had any experience with this sort of thing? Thanks for reading, I know it's long but I could use some help here!
