So, many of you know that I was being interviewed for my "dream job." I had applied for the position back in July and waiting a couple of weeks before I was called in for an interview. That interview was last Tuesday and, while it went well, I was told that a decision wouldn't be made until all of the other applicants were interviewed and that I shouldn't expect a call for at least 1-2 weeks. However, on Saturday, only 4 days later, I got the call. And, the job was offered to me
!
Initially, they advertised the position as part-time. But, at my interview, I was told that they weren't sure where they were going -- would they just take on one part-time individual, would they make the job full-time, would they have two part-time positions available? Well, I don't know if they decided to go with two individuals for two part-time positions or not, but I was told the position was part-time to start and could easily move into a full-time position with room for growth, pay increase, and, down the road, possible tuition reimbursement. But, part-time or full-time, it didn't matter. After all, this was my "dream job." Or, should I say...this IS my "dream job."
Before everything can be finalized, I have to pass both a drug test and a background check. But, I know I take nothing other than my prescription medications (which I will bring with me for the drug screening). And, I know that I've never been arrested. So, it's looking like this is as close to a done deal as one could be. I am leaving in about 45 minutes for the drug test and the company has all of my information for the background check. Therefore, I should have a start date within the next 24-48 hours. And, with them moving as quickly as they are, I am thinking that I could be starting as early as late this week, this weekend, or the start of next week.
Now, I suppose you're all wondering what the job is. I think I've mentioned it in passing in one of my posts, but the position is for an assistant pet nurse. And, what that basically means is that I am the third hand for both the veterinarians and the vet techs. It's not the most glamorous of positions as it means I'll also be doing a lot of cleaning and client work, but it allows me to work in my chosen field while getting my foot in the door and working from the ground up. It is an opportunity to learn and there is a lot of room for growth within the company. I have been told it is likely that, in a year, I can move up to a pet nurse position. So, really, this is my "dream job."
I will be working in a busy vet office with 4 vets, quite a number of vet techs and pet nurses, and a full office staff. They do tend to cross-train and so I'll be working in the office as well as in the back rooms and surgical suites. I will be doing a lot of cleaning, sterilizing, and the like, but I will also handle the pets and hold them during procedures, get to sit-in (and scrub-in!) on surgeries, and prepare medical tests. So, it will be a busy environment where no one day is quite like the next. And, perhaps, in the future, it will allow me to return to school so that I can become a certified vet tech (and from there, possibly, a veterinarian).
The pay, to start, is, well, not great. But, there are definite advantages. There are benefits for even part-time employees and you get a discount on veterinary services as well as the company's partner's products and services. And, there is room to grow within the pay scale as well. But, considering I am unemployed presently with no compensation, any pay is a step up from where I am now. And, I'd rather work for less in a field that I love than have a lucrative career that I dislike. With this job, I can find happiness in what I do and be proud and honored to work within a company that I respect. That's a tremendous gift -- regardless of the pay scale.
All in all, I'm incredibly excited. I just have to get through the drug screen this afternoon and the background check and then I'll get my start date and be called in to fill out the remaining paperwork. I am going out tomorrow to purchase my scrubs and some sneakers as that is the dress code, but, other than that, I'm ready. I am in awe that the chief of staff of the vet hospital chose me for the job. My "dream job." Speaking of which...I got my "dream job!" I am so very grateful. I'm beyond words. So, this will have to do
