We've had a rat in our kitchen ductwork all week last week. His gnawing drove me insane--it was loud enough to awaken me in the middle of the night!
I didn't hear him yesterday, but he tends to make noise around 7PM, and we were out for the night. However, when I opened the pantry doors (under the stairs and near the soffit), this morning, I saw chewed wood shavings on the floor, and boxes knocked over--and then I looked up, and saw a large chewed hole in the wall! And I had just given the pantry a thorough, take-out-everything-and re-organize it cleaning a week ago, pre-Mr. Rat!
We have a heat pump, with both parts of the unit (a "package" unit) outside. There's a very large air return vent in our dining room. DH removed the vent cover, and saw that Mr. Rat had chewed the ducts to get inside.
We have 9, VERY lazy cats, that's all I'll say! Start earning your Friskies, guys!
