What kind of car do you have? My BF is a BMW mechanic. Sometimes shops, if they are not on the up and up, will tell you the problem is something more than it is.

Regardless, tell me what kind of car you have, you might be able to sell it for parts to someone that wants it as opposed to just taking a loss on it.

You said you heard a flapping? Was it a clunking or a flapping?

and FYI

You do NOT have to change your water pump when you do a Timing belt, and visa versa. It is a good idea, as you have to remove all the same stuff to get to either part, so you are saving money if you do it all at once, but it is not necissary at all.

A Honda. Really. As used cars go, they're the best. I've personally seen them last more than 200,000 miles, easy, with no major work. Plus they're easy to repair.

Although my dreamcar is a Prius.

Oh, and that's too bad about your old car. I'm sorry it was so unexpected that you'd need a new one!

My BMW is a 1989 with over 230K miles on it, and STILL going strong. It was ill maintained in the 4 years before I owned it as well.

It has been the MOST reliable car I have ever owned, or seen. You can get a good 318 i 1989 to 1992 for less than 2,000 bucks.

They are awsome cars

I just saw this, I am so sorry that baby is done, but it did sound like good news re the loan and a nice new to you car

I highly recommend Subaru's - just research the model/year - some of the older ones had really bad years. If I weren't half asleep, I'd remember the name of the guide I used to go to the library to use for a reference. It would list the car's make/model by year, and then rate it for frequency of repairs, engine, body, safety in crashes...just quite a few factors I wanted to know on average what to expect if I bought one.

My Subaru was bought used with 106,000 on it (!!) and I'm about to hit 166,000. She still gets good mileage, still has a nice body, but she leaks oil (a common subaru problem). She really does run very well for an old car (1989 model legacy sedan).

I will never buy anything again but a Subaru (I've owned a Nissan Sentra, a Toyota Celica GT - my one sports car...ah, what a car that was!, and a Dodge Colt liftback - which I also loved), and dearly long for the time I can afford one of the newer Foresters (which depending on the year, most recent are best) are extremely well rated.

i have been in the trade for 25 years and 15 of that was for GM and i have never ever replaced a water pump with a timming belt unless it was the cause of the failure
.
And if i was over there id fix your car for nothing, just done a rebuild for a young couple who were desperate i got a nice roast dinner for it
