So everyone knows we got snow here in the South (Atlanta) on Sunday. The kitties and I hid inside all day from the cold and it was very nice.
Well yesterday (Monday) morning I woke up and checked outside and noticed the whole parking lot for my apartment complex was covered in black ice. My car was burried in 6 inches of snow I called work and told them I wasn't coming in because since I am originally from here in Atlanta I don't know how to drive in ice. My boss informed me that the roads were clear and he had no problem getting into work so I was allowed to come in late, but I did need to come in since my counterpart (who lives in an area that was even harder hit by the snow) had already called in and only one of us can be out at a time when the office is open.
So - I went outside, started my car to warm up and worked on scraping off all the ice and snow. Right when I finished scraping and went to walk around the back of the car to get in - I slipped in the black ice which I had already walked over at least 3 times. I fell onto my left ankle and ended up on my back underneath the exhaust pipe of my car.
My cell phone was inside the car and I was lying (with wet hair, by the way) in the ice with my ankle pointing the wrong direction. So - I started screaming bloody murder (actually, I just screamed "Somebody help!" over and over) until one of my neighbors finally came out, turned off my car and got my phone so I could call 911.
Turns out I have a Tri-Malleolar ankle fracture, and I've fractured my Tibia and Fibula about 3 inches above the ankle, with dislocation. They set it at the hospital and sent me home, I go to meet with the Orthopedist on Thursday to find out about the surgery which I'm going to need next week once the swelling goes down.
From what I've learned so far I'm going to need at least 3 plates and around 20 screws to put my leg back together again. I won't be able to bear any weight on the leg for at least 8 weeks, and it will be months of physical therapy before I will walk again.
As my apartment is on the second floor, I have been temporarily moved to my father's 1 story house and my mother is staying at my place. She brought my kitties over to see me today which has helped a lot. My parents are on the way right now to pick up a wheelchair and shower chair from a friend who had a similar injury recently, which will help a lot since these crutches are killing me! My boss has already hired a temp to do my job in my absence, which I'm not sure if I should be worried about or not.
Anyway, I just thought I'd stop in and say hello, and let everyone know what happend to me this week! I hope everyone else is having a better one than I am!
