Something very similar happened to me once when I was in my mid 20s (although I wasn't pregnant!) A salesman knocked at the door, and I answered. "Hi" he said, "Is your mum home?" My best friend (who is 4' 11'') was in her driveway, very obviously pregnant (at age 29) when a door to door salesman came up and asked her if her mother was home!
She told him "I AM the mother!"
