How to keep cats from biting on the carpet?

Does anyone have a cat that has done this, but figured how to stop it? If so, please let me know how.

Now in response to these questions....

Can you tell us a little bit more about the cat?  My cat's from paws have been declawed

How old is he (or she)? He is 9 years old

For how long have they been biting on the carpet? Its been a couple months now, since he had to be locked up in the office at night. And the reason he is now locked up at night is because he started roaming around the house chewing on plants while we were sleeping.

Is that the only object they like to chew on? Plants and the carpet
