You need to go back and read the posts again. No one said that the weight-loss caloric intake should be based on the current weight! However, a SAFE starting point of the caloric intake for weight loss IS based on 80% of the CURRENT weight. In my opinion, calculating calories based on ideal weight may not be enough to keep a cat satisfied initially. Calorie reduction and weight loss must be gradual in order to avoid issues with the liver.
You actually would NOT base a weight-loss caloric intake equation off of the cat's CURRENT weight. You would base the daily needed caloric intake off of the cats IDEAL weight, or the weight the cat is supposed to be. You can ask a veterinarian or veterinary technician to help you determine the right amount of food to feed. However, you have to remember that canned food has more calories than dry food, so if you're feeding both canned and dry food you have to make sure to figure out the amount of calories in BOTH kinds of food and reduce accordingly.
