There are actually other explosives in most cars these days, in addition to the airbags. Apparently a part in the seat belt retractors is explosive, too.
For what it's worth, I stop at accidents all the time. I've seen some bad ones. I have seen a lot of people with minor burns from the airbags, but I've seen some people walk away from accidents that would have been fatal 20 years ago, too.
