We believe that our 12 year old female, Shadow, is depressed. Over the past three months we lost both of her older companions to kidney disease. We've been trying to transition her diet, since she was sharing prescription diet food with her sister who passed away in April. We also got her a new friend, a one year old named Izzi. Shadow is usually playful and follows me around all day looking for pets and attention. But since Saturday, which was an unusually stressed out day for my wife and I, she hasn't been eating and has been excessively tired. She threw up twice as well.
We had her at the vet yesterday, and they don't feel that there is an underlying medical condition yet, given the circumstances and the tests they ran. We're spoon feeding her high calorie food, but she's still not eating on her own. We also got a feliway spray and isolated the kitten. We're trying to play with her, but she's not super interested. She'll snuggle with us, and she purrs when we pet her, but that's about it right now. The vet has prescribed an antidepressant for a few days and an antibiotic just in case. Any other suggestions or things we can do?
This came on quick. We knew she was likely stressed, but she was getting by until Saturday. The vet said that it can happen this way, any other similar experiences?
