Hi Everyone!

On Tuesday (the 5th), my 1 year old cat suddenly started fumbling around and falling down whenever he tried to walk. within a couple hours he was unable to walk at all. He could still move his limbs, but they were not weight bearing at all. I rushed him to an ER Vet and was there all night with him. They basically told me that they thought he had cancer or organ failure and I should consider euthanizing him. I obviously decided to take him in for a second opinion.

The second vet has been giving him liquids through an IV, antibiotics and steroids. They have seen a little improvement in his red blood cell count, but that's about it. He is still not walking. He is alert and meows/lifts his head up, but that's about it. The second vet though that maybe he had eaten something toxic and could be flushed out, but its been about 36 hours and he is in the same state. He tested negative again for leukemia, so its not that. He also has recently lost a couple pounds and is not eating very well.

Has anyone on here dealt with a similar situation? The vets are all unsure of what is going on and I am very worried about him.

Thank you!!

I don't fully understand the lab report, but the vet said it showed that his liver was overworking, low platelets and red blood cells, and abnormal protein levels. I can post a picture of it if you know how to read blood reports?

Post the lab results, please, it may or may not help. Was he ever tested for coronavirus (not COVID 19)? While that doesn't have to lead to FIP, it can sometimes especially in cats younger than 2 years of age with otherwise compromised immune systems. What else did he test negative for?

Ask for what else can he be given to help with his liver function if there was some toxin involved. The more you know, the more you know to ask.

You can also ask for an internal medicine vet consult if your vets can't come up with other testing ideas.

Hi!
I just posted the report and an over view from the first vet. The new vet seems more optimistic.
So far he has just had blood reports ran, leukemia tested, and just like temperature. So nothing crazy but I am not sure what to even request. I’m thinking X-ray or ct scan?
I will definitely look into the specialist

How is your 1 year old cat doing today, S stormifluffy ?

It mentioned in your report, above, that Fluffy was treated for an URI?
What medications was he on? and for how long?
Did he stop eating around that time?

Edit to add: Ask the Vet, if giving Fluffy some SamE, or milk thistle, Denamarin, would help with his Liver values.
Also, if they can give him something for the anemia.
And if they think that any internal parasites can cause this.

Yes he was treated for this around 2 weeks ago. He was taking Clavamox. He stopped eating before he was taking the medicine, but then once he started using the medicine he started eating again. He was on it for about 5 days. Last week he seemed relatively normal, but then just completely crashed with this.

I just thought that perhaps the antibiotic may have interfered with his eating and being fully hydrated...but since it was Clavamox, and he was eating...then that theory is wrong.

I edited my post above to add this:

If they think that Fluffy could have some sort of blockage in his bile ducts. GGT numbers.

Also, if they can give him something for the anemia.

Do you think that your Fluffy could have gotten any worms, or internal parasites, even from fleas, to cause him any anemia?

I am so glad you got a second opinion,...since that first Vet recommending euthanasia...absolutely floored me,...if that Vet was just going by Fluffy's blood work.

Is your Fluffy able to eat at all, now?
anything, Recovery food, critical care food, syringe feeding?

I see the reports note possible non-regenerative anemia - that can also be affiliated with FIV (feline immunodeficiency virus). Was he tested for this as well? The blood work is confusing (coming from a layperson), as it would seem to denote inflammation and/or infection, and some sort of liver issue, but not all the associated liver enzymes are elevated. So, perhaps some liver function is being affected by the type of infection that is involving the liver itself. Bile duct issues can cause an infectious situation, for example. Kind of along the same lines as a few comments that were made above by cat nap cat nap .

I would definitely get a specialist (internal medicine) involved, especially if your vet isn't coming up with a possible diagnosis and treatment plan. An ultrasound might shed some light on the liver.

Keep us posted.

I hope your little one is doing better today. Our girl cat Sadie had a similar episode at two years old, she lost mobility, and when I placed her on the bed she lost control of her bladder all over herself and seemed confused at what was going on. We rushed her to the vet, they did all kinds of tests and were only able to find Immune Mediated Hemolytic Anemia with no underlying cause. The only thing that helped bring her out of that episode was cyclosporine and prednisolone. She's now on low dose prednisolone for life. But she's doing great!
Is kitty on any steroids and/or other immunosuppressant medications? Even if there's an underlying cause, it should help stabilize the anemia so that you can find out if there is anything else at play or if it's idiopathic.
