He is not eating or drinking much, seems to have no appetite. he is lethargic and sits hunched in corners or in closets. He does not look well, his coat has lost its luster. He seems to be in pain now as when I touch him or pick him up he stiffens up and lets out these little cries. He won't play with me or my other 2 cats right now. We have been to the vet 3 times now since last October, first time he had all the symptoms mentioned above plus labored breathing, minus the pain he seems to be in now. They did x-ray and said there was something wrong with the airways in his lungs, but everything else seems to be fine except he was dehydrated and they had to rehydrate him. I was given some liquid medicine to give him and they gave him a steroid shot. He seemed to perk up after that until early this spring and the barely eating anything started up again off and on. Took him in for his yearly checkup in May and they said he seemed to be fine and had put some of the weight he lost back on. But now he is worse than he was the first time...plus he is now in pain. I took him back in a couple weeks ago convinced he was anemic, they ran blood work and checked his pancreas and said although his protein level was high, his red blood count was good and liver and kidney functioning properly. Asked if he should get another steroid shot, but was told that was for something else and not needed this time. He was dehydrated again so they gave him more fluids and some special high calorie/nutritional cans of wet food, but he has not perked up this time since he came home. I don't want to lose my little Tazzy, but I can't afford to keep paying the vet when they cannot figure out what is wrong with him. ($1,500 so far since last fall). Does anyone out there know what may be wrong with my little guy?

:welcomesign::alright: Welcome to TCS although I am very sorry that it is under such difficult circumstances. We have very knowledgeable members here and I am hoping and praying that they chime in soon!
Until then, is there anyway that you could consult with a holistic vet? There are herbs such as marshmallow root, slippery elm. licorice root, red raspberry leaf, chamomile and lemon balm that are safe for cats and very soothing to the internal organs. My vet and I were both raised with herbal medicine so we are a good team for combining traditional and modern medicine.
Certain herbs, esp. the marshmallow root and slippery elm are excellent for the lungs, kidneys and intestines; for instance, when I myself was using marshmallow root & red raspberry leaf for chronic kidney issues, my asthma cleared up! And my FIV+ feral is perking up on marshmallow root, slippery elm and licorice root; usually switching around Clavamox & Biomoxx keeps him healthy but this time, the antibiotics aren't cutting it.
Anyway, I hope you get some good advice here soon. (A fellow TCSer had a cat getting treated for feline herpes for months but finally the member's dad took the cat to his feline specialist who discovered a benign throat tumor, removed it & the cat bounced right back to excellent health).
7 years is the prime of life for a kitty! I hope that you get good answers soon. Meanwhile, I am sending prayers and vibes for healing to your dear boy, Tazzy :vibes::vibes: and lots of hugs to you :grouphug2:

Please keep us updated! Kitties everywhere will benefit from your shared experience! Even humans have trouble getting a good diagnosis - my IBD left me barely functioning with a nagging pain in my lower gut & it wasn't until after my 2nd colonoscopy that the surgeon suggested that my doctor add Bentyl to sulfasalazine and meloxicam that I could get back to normal. Prior to that, it took frequent red raspberry leaf doses & slippery elm to manage the pain (I am family caregiver to 3 so getting the rest needed for effective holistic therapy is a challenge).

Maybe I'm wrong but it doesn't seem like the vet addressed the pain Tazzy is in. Where is the pain?

Sending Tazzy lots of get better vibes.

I called the vet again the other day and got the answering machine. I left message saying that he now seems to be in pain and asked for them to call me back as soon as possible, and also sent an email. I got an email from them this morning with a suggestion that he be brought back in for more x-rays and FLV & FIV viral screening. He had x-ray 8 months ago and is not an outdoor cat nor are my other two cats sick, so not sure the viral screening is necessary. What do you think? I am syringe feeding him right now to keep him going. I am taking him back in this week. Just not sure they are on the right path here...running out of hope, patience and money.

:alright: This is so discouraging....any ideas outside of urinary/kidney issues that could be causing his pain? Is your vet the only one in the area? Sending prayers and vibes :vibes::vibes::vibes:
