I'm just kidding about the title....I hope.
My neutered male cat is very vocal and capable of being VERY loud. he will frequently sit in one specific window and yowl loudly and repeatedly over and over, also pawing at the window glass, sometimes going as far as rearing up on his hind legs to do it with both front paws. usually he does this until i lose my temper and I yell at him, or rush over there etc.... then he'll be back doing it again a few minutes later. he vocalizes for no reason on other occasions too, but it is at its worst when he is sitting in this one specific window. I have never had a cat this vocal before. it doesn't seem to be related to any kind of discomfort (though he often stares at me when he does it). the best I can figure is that when he's in the window he wants to go outside, which is not an option when he isn't on his harness. Sometimes there is activity outside the window, nieghboors or other cats, but usually when he does it there is nothing specific outside to even capture his interest. in the other instances I assume he wants to be fed or just wants attention. While I spend a lot of time with both of my cats I can't realistically devote every second of the day to indulging his every whim.
lately it has been getting even worse, I work night shift and his incessant howling is depriving me of sleep now (i can't just get earplugs because I need to be able to hear my alarm). it is getting to the point where it is making me VERY angry that he won't just shut up. he'll be fine for hours sometime, and sleep on the bed with me, or somewhere else, then suddenly it's like he says "ok gotta go be annoying now" and he heads down to the window.
He also has an aggression problem and launches unprovoked attacks on his sister (who although easily big enough to defend herself, is very meek. whatever defense she does put up, goes ignored and he often corners her and presses his attack anyway seemingly disregarding the possibility of being injured himself.) he bites me fairly often as well.
he is already on amitriyptaline as part of a treatment for a urinary problem that might be partly anxiety-based (feline idiopathic cystitis was a term that was mentioned). all these behaviors were present prior to the medication. although his urinary problem is better (i monitor his litter box usage) his other behavior is the same as before. loud, aggressive, sometimes destructive, and attention-seeking. because of the layout of my apartment i don't even have a separate room i can put him in during the day, and i suspect he'd yowl and tear at the door all day anyway (he tore his front claws nearly down to the quick trying to rip his way out of his carrier during a vet trip)
is there anything i can do here? I love him but he is becoming incredibly hard to live with and it's causing me to go to work exhausted some nights as well.
