Fighting for ferals in NW NJ!
Hi! We live out in NW NJ, but have friends in Yonkers and New Rochelle.

There was a problem with the neighborhood cats out by our friend, and we helped to do a lot of trapping out there on the weekends two years ago. There are actually a lot of low-cost spay/neuter places just a hop, skip and jump away from you. I don't know the policies of them all, but so you have the info, here's the list:

If you want to get involved in fostering with a rescue group:

Paws To Love Adoptions, Inc.

6.0 miles
(718) 294-8058
Hours: Any time, really. We are a rescue organization and take in animals any time. People who want to adopt, come by appointment only, and/or we deliver the animal to the prospective new home.

Save The Animals Rescue Team II

12.0 miles
(201) 797-8861
http://www.start2pets.petfinder.org
Hours: Cats are available Thursdays and Fridays 7pm to 9pm by appointment only and Saturdays 10am to 4pm. Dogs are available Saturdays 10am to 4pm.

SPCA of Westchester
590 North State Road
Briarcliff Manor, NY 10510
16.0 miles
(914) 941-2894
http://www.spca914.org
Hours: We are open Monday to Saturday 10am to 4pm and Sunday 1pm to 4pm.

The places in NJ do mean crossing the GW, but depending upon when you're going (especially if it's an emergency at night - nice to know that's available) traffic isn't by definition too bad.

Hope you can join us in the Caring for Strays and Ferals forum!
I bet you've got lots to share - and we may have resources and links that you'll find helpful.

Thank you for all the information, Laurie! I'll definitely try to get involved with some of them--especially the SPCA of Westchester. I have so much love to give and only so much room for kitties

Also, don't forget to check out North Shore Animal League America. They're in Port Washington, Long Island. This is a bit of a drive from Yonkers, but not bad if you cut over the Throg's Neck Bridge and pick up the Cross Island Parkway.
They're an incredible no-kill shelter and if you don't mind the drive (books on CD in the car help) it is an awesome place to work/volunteer. They also have a terrific foster care program.
Warning: If you go check out the shelter, you will not leave without adopting something. The last time I went there - just to ask them for help as a representative of another shelter - I came home with a lovely special-needs kitty. I couldn't resist her!
