I just got a call tonight from the director of the shelter I volunteer and foster for. She told me that one of the kittens I fostered in the summer of 2004 died about a month ago. I'm stunned and heartbroken! I've been crying off and on all night.
Boo Radley was one of five kittens in that litter...my first foster kittens. I hadn't planned on fostering, but they sent out a mass e-mail plea. A suburban kill shelter was full to the brim, and were going to PTS many cats and kittens. They were desperately looking for foster homes so they could save as many as possible. I called and told them that I would. Later they asked if I would take an entire litter. Of course! Two days later I picked up five beautiful all black kittens...all sleeping peacefully. When I got them home, I had a room all set up. I expected them to be scared, shy, and still a bit sleepy. What I was not expecting was for all of them to come barrelling out of the carrier & start playing with everything in sight, crawling on my lap, climbing my legs and back! They were the sweetest kittens I had ever seen, and still stand today as the sweetest I ever fostered.
They all had literary names, Ernest Hemingway, Daisy Buchanan, Pip Pirrup, Romeo Montague, and Boo Radley. Boo was the shyest initially, and a bit of a recluse, so he earned his name. He was also the most beautiful...a gorgeous long haired boy.
All five came down with URIs that they must have picked up at the shelter. They were all a snotty mess, especially Boo & Romeo. But they all recovered. As they grew (they were only 7 weeks when I got them), Ernie got adopted (he was the biggest, and never really got that sick), Daisy and Pip went to another foster home (I was exhausted by that time!). I kept Boo & Romeo a bit longer so they could be healthier...I had them almost 3 months. They finally got adopted together about a month later.
Then tonight, this news. I can't believe it. His meowmy and daddy must be devastated! I guess I've been lucky that everyone I've ever fostered has lived, and I know this happens, but not to Boo. Not to my Boo.
Sorry for the long post. Here are some pictures of my beautiful boy:
Here he is with his best friend, and brother, Romeo:
