We have a 14 week old kitten in our family, and are now catsitting a 10-month-old cat. The older cat has all her shots, but our kitten hasn't yet completed all his kitten shots. Do we need to keep these two completely separated to avoid illness?

I would indeed keep them seperated untill the kitten has at bare minimum 2 doses of vaccines.
Vaccination does not prevent a cat from being a chronic carrier if already exposed.... that can pass on to a non-vaccinated cat.
