I'd like to start by introducing myself, my name is TJ, my fiancee and I just moved to wisconsin from Chicago, IL. Back in August, my fiance and I found a newborn kitten by my mothers house in Waukegan, IL. He has back legs that do not work. They are straight and dangly, and set farther back than on a normal cat. He also had a really bad case of fleas. We weren't supposed to have cats in our apartment but we couldn't stand by and let him die, so we snuck him in.
Over the last 6 or so months, little Sam has grown to be a strong and lively little guy despite what the vets said. He learned how to use his back "hips" to bounce around the apartment, and even figured out his own versioon of a run. His front arms are very strong and he climbs everything in sight. He truly is a blessing and a testament to life.
The initial problems we ran into were that he had no control of his bowels and his anus seemed as though it had no feeling, so he doesnt really know when he is going to the bathroom. We figured out how to work with diapers.
Sam got really sick recently and started throwing up and not eating, after a day of this behaviour we took him to the vet who told us that the skin on his "boy part" had hardened and was causing a blockage so he could not urinate. They drained 20 ounces of urine from him and sent us to an animal e.r. The doctors at the e.r. explained that the constant weight and pressure being kept on his lower half combined with his urine in the diapers had caused his skin to scar and harden which is what was causing his problem and that surgery was needed to try and fix him.
I am new here and did not know where to start so I thought that a post in a forum could not hurt. They wanted $4,000 just to start. My fiancee and I each had to apply for the hospital's "Care Credit" system and another friend applied for the remainder. When we took Sammy in last august, we tried to find someone who might want him, but no one did, but we could not just put him in a shelter where they might not give him the small bit of extra attention he needed. In the time since then he has shown us, that if he has a chance, he is a strong resillient little guy, and can prove A LOT of people wrong, that is why we still continue to fight for him. Right now, I don't know where to turn because it may be that we need more money in the near future and I was hoping to set up a donation request on the web. It is late and I am at a relative's house because we just moved and do not have internet at home. If anyone is willing to help, I can provide ANY information as to Sam, the hospital he is at, his doctor's name, etc. I am not trying to be a beggar, but I cannot watch a life be lost due only to a shortage of money, it just isn't fair to someone who has so much life left in him. In the next few days I am going to try and set up a website with pictures and videos of him.
If anyone can help, even a little bit, we would be beyond grateful. If someone even has any advice or information on anything helpful I would be thankful. All I have tonight are these pictures i kept in my email inbox from his first week with us and then when he was only a few months old. Thank you in advance, for your advice or help!
