My kitten Nemo (5 months old) has done this twice in the past 3 days. She seems to be coughing or wheezing. It SEEMS like what our mainecoon does when he has hairballs, but Nemo doesn't cough anything up, she just does that sort of... heavy outward breathing then is fine. Both times she's done this it lasted under a minute. She didn't seem distressed by it.
I'm not sure whether she has hairballs or if she might be allergic to something on the cat climber she's been spending TONS of time in for the past few days since we moved it in front of the window with the bird feeder outside it. I did vaccuum the carpeting on it, but it's still got a visible amount of fur shed by our mainecoon that the vaccuum didn't pick up. Could she be breathing this in or licking it when she grooms herself, or could there be some kind of dandruff or something that's bothering her?
I'm going to cover the carpeting with some old (clean) towels and see if that prevents her from doing that again... but just in case, could that be a symptom of anything more serious, or am I just being paranoid because my medium-hair kitten doesn't cough up hairballs the same way the mainecoon does?
