Hair Loss

My cat is 5 years old and recently started losing his hair. There is a 3 inch strip on his back and a small patch on one of his hind legs. Where the hair is missing his skin is the color of his fur, his is multi-colored. Has anyone experienced this with their kitty's? I am awaiting an appointment with the vet I am just trying to prepare for what he may tell me.
