If you do try green-lipped mussel oil, don't buy Moxxor, it's a marketing scam. It's funny, because it contains a lot of Menhaden oil, if I remember correctly. Hunh. Just went to check, and it looks like they've changed the formula:  http://corporate.moxxor.com/product/

If using green lipped mussels, it makes sense to buy the powder - it's less processed. The oil is made FROM the powder.  There may be other sources, but if you're in the U.S. you can buy the powder from http://www.hare-today.com.

Thanks, LDG!

After I read the article, I clicked on the link to the Moxxor oil and found that Jean Hofve is selling it, like a local distributor. While I respect her knowledge and opinions on cat care, one cannot help but be a bit biased if you're selling the product rather than just writing informational articles.

Same here. I came across Moxxor, too, on Dr. Hofve's website and researched it. I was looking for an alternative omega-3 supplement for Sebastian. I could tell from the websites that came up that it was a little fishy (no pun intended
) and I didn't pursue it any further.

Carolina had mentioned (in an old thread) that she used Tripernol green lipped mussel oil at some point. I had PM-ed her to ask if she still used it and/or what her experiences were, but I never heard back. (I know she's been busy). I wasn't willing to try it without hearing another opinion. The debate then was that Tripernol used some kind of soy in their formula, but their formula has changed, and now they use sunflower oil. Not sure if that's any better. The ingredients seem okay: http://bio-mer.com/tripernol.html
  Any thoughts on this?

Also, when I was doing research, I read that the powder can cause issues for cats with shellfish allergies, but the oil not so much.

I knew of someone who gave the powder to their cat everyday and it seemed to help with her arthritis. It was called "someone's formula" and seemed to be for a dog? Can't remember. I do remember how good it smelled though and I'd want to go eat a pot of mussels! :lol3:

Let us know if you hear anything. All the marketing for it does make it sound like more hype than reality, but if you research krill oil it's the same way. There's big money in supplements now. I ordered a supplement for myself off Amazon and the company used the information in my shipping profile to leave messages on my phone and e-mail trying to persuade me to buy more. They also said that if I reviewed the product I would get a free bottle of a product of my choice. At least they had the decency not to require a 5-star review.

Anyway the commercialism and reveal that Jean Hofve's article is more of an endorsement has left me with a bad taste and I don't know whether or not to pursue green lipped mussel oil.

Hi

Moxxor contains grape seed + Kiwi seed oil - I am really not certain of their safety for cats..

Knowing grape seeds may cause kidney failure.

If any Omega 3 supplement contains sunflower oil for ex. - it is rich in Omega 6 which is inflammatory, exactly what we try to avoid..

Very difficult indeed to find a suitable supplement for our carnivores.

Be aware most human versions are loaded with toxic/harmful substances for cats, such as citrus etc..

I have been doing lots of research as my cat is CRF. Fantastic results using a combination of Ubiquinol and highly potent Omega 3.

Hoping my comments will be useful..

Even though this post is dated 2012, I will reply regardless.  I am a rep of Moxxor.  All said in these comments are untrue.

Moxxor IS of the finest green~lipped mussles you can find.  The waters in New Zealand are actually pure.  The contents

of Moxxor are green-lipped mussle oil, grapeseed oil and kiwifruit seed oil ~ end of contents.  There have been articles regarding toxicity

of grapes for animals, however, the oil that comes from the grapes are protein free (meaning no toxicity).  I don't

understand why people would choose fish oil, krill oil or flax seed oil when these contain GMOs, mercury, gluten,

pesticides, excipients, and chemical preservatives (not to mention part olive oil).  I am not trying to sell Moxxor here, but I will defend it as I have

been on it and am much better with inflammation and arthritis then I was before I started it.  No more pain meds. but on

a rare occasion.  My pets are on it (cats) and have been for awhile now.  Their coats are the shiniest I have ever seen.

As with any supplement, you will read articles that are both good and bad, but I can testify (from taking it) that it is truly

a fine product.

Must make a correction in my previous post.  "The oil that comes from Grape SEEDS are protein free"  No toxicity at all.  Never a problem reported.

I take MOXXOR for myself along with giving it to my two girls with Leukemia. It has worked wonders for all three of us. Whether a pyramid market or not, still the best omega 3 i have ever tried. Have been taking it for 3 years now. Will never change to fish oil because of fillers and pesticides, not to mention mercury and excipients. I prefer pure MOXXOR~ Omega 3 supplements.
