Hey guys.
So, Allen was diagnosed with giardia on November 5th, after a positive smear and snap test. I was given a 5 day dose of Panacur (liquid), and liquid Metrodinazole. Instructions were one synringe of Panacur for 5 days, and 2ml of Metrodinazole given by syringe 2x a day.
It seemed to start working immediately. Poops were a dark brown color, extremely solid, and looked the way they were supposed to. Unfortunately, by November 11th his poops started deteriorating again to what they originally were, which was the bright gold/brown gooey stuff with the really bad smell. This seems to coincide with the end of the Panacur treatment.
Now, he has been on Metrodinazole the entire time, and it looks like we have enough left for one more 2ml dose tonight. I talked to the vet over the phone and he said he didn't think more Metro would help, but gave me a 7day dose of Panacur. He also mentioned that possibly his system needs to get back into order and said we can try a 30day Fortiflora treatment.
Allen got the first synringe of this Panacur treatment last night, and the poop this morning was still the bright color and smelled, but it at least had some shape to it, not just liquid goo.
He said it is possible that Allen might have reinfected himself just from licking his butt after using the litterbox. Right after Allen was diagnosed, I emptied the LB, disinfected it and the general area, and did the same thing to his dishes and food area. Now I am trying to clean his anal region with a disinfectant wipe every time I see him use the bathroom.
Has anyone had a Giardia case that took a different treatment, or a second round to cure it? I'm just stumped because for the first five days, his poops were GREAT.
Thanks!
