I just got a Furminator and wow it's addictive.

My cat's hair just keeps coming out. I'm afraid it's ripping his hair more than necessary and if I kept going it'd eventually make him bald. How do you know when it's enough?

I only make 2-3 passes over an area at a time and then move to another.  I might go back but you do need to be careful because it can irritate their skin.  My 2 aren't very cooperative for grooming so sometimes those passes are all I get in one sitting anyway.

I found that I was overgrooming one of my cats with the furminator (she loved it and I just didn't quit). Her fur got really thin, not quite bald but you could see her skin through it. I've found it works best if I limit the grooming sessions to about 5 minutes two or three times a week.

Thank you for your replies.

Yeah, that's what I thought, that I'm making my cat's hair thin. I thought it was pulling loose hair only, but I guess not. I will limit grooming time.
