I am in for a hot cup of coffee and to warm up a bit before heading back to the barn. Racer foundered this morning. I have had the vet out and he has gave Race a shot of bute, and left me some Bute to give Racer as well. Founder is (from what I can understand of it so far) when a horse eats to many carbs, they become stocked up in their legs and several things happen. Their coffin bone rotates, they can't walk hardly at all, they can go completely lame and they can die if it gets to extreme.
The vet is puzzled as to why this has happened. Racer does not get mega amounts of grain, he is on mediocre hay, and no grass. It is thought that this might be foldover from his thyroid problem. I have been out with him most of the day trying to get him comfortable. Standing with him for an hour on and an hour off in the creek to cool off his feet, and hunting for answers to this frustrating condition.
Right now he is standing under the trees, won't move to much and I just put his blanket on him to keep the rain off him and gave him a gram of Bute. I am heading back to the barn where I can keep a better eye on him. It is going to be a long night..
