I recently took in a semi-feral kitten who was treated about three weeks ago for intestinal roundworms. He is using his litter box beautifully (such a good boy!), but I am noticing that he has on average about four well-formed bowel movements per day. This seems pretty excessive. His stools often have a pungent odor, as well. No diarrhea or soft stools, though. I had a stool sample re-checked for parasites last week, and that came back negative, so it seems like parasites are not the issue.
Is it normal for a young cat to have such frequent bowel movements? He is on a grain-free Wellness kitten diet of mostly canned food (two small cans per day), with some dry Wellness kitten food also to supplement (about 1/2 cup per day, sometimes a little more). He always drinks a lot of water as well. Does this sound like it could be a food allergy/sensitivity issue? He does have feline herpes and some other health issues courtesy of being born in filth and weaned too early, but his energy is very high and he seems to feel good most of the time, w/ no obvious signs of gastrointestinal distress (aside from occasional stinky gas if he eats any "people" food). I just wonder if his poor little immune system is hypersensitive b/c of his history (?), or if I am worrying over nothing.
Any thoughts appreciated! Thanks.
