Hello everyone! I just had an experience which may be helpful to others and wanted to share.
I had posted several times about my cat, Puppy, and his sudden behavioral problems. He meowed at night (at the walls), he was ridiculously hyperactive, and he had hallucinations.
Everyone here gave standard behavioral advice. When I called the vet, he was completely not helpful. So, we had been bearing with it. I finally typed in "feline mental disorder" into Google one night, and came up with feline hyperesthesia syndrome. So, I made a vet appointment for this.
Thankfully, they gave us a different vet who knew about FHS. She also knew a lot about other diseases that have similar symptoms. Bloodwork came back clean, so most of those were ruled out. Except allergies. She put him on Predisone.
We have now had three whole days of happy, sleepy kitty! When we got him, he was a lazy boy who slept for 18 hours a day. For the last 3 months, he's been sleeping less than 8 hours a day. On day three, we were out all day and only played with him for 30 minutes when we got come. He slept soundly that night regardless. We used to play with him 4 hours a day (HARD playing), and he'd still stay awake all night long. The day before meds, he had 4 bouts of crazies that lasted several minutes each. He was so freaked that he ran into me and acted like something was chasing him. Since the allergy meds, no crazies! Just our peaceful Puppy getting into normal kitty trouble (like the laundry and my computer cables!)
The vet says he could be allergic to any of the following: corn, soy, rice, beef, chicken, or lamb. His food has no corn or soy, but it does have rice, chicken, and beef. So now we have to figure out what he suddenly got allergic to. The true test will be if he goes back to crazy mode when we wean him off the meds.
Anyway, I had no idea that an ALLERGY could cause behavioral problems and no physical problems. Maybe this will be helpful for someone else!
