Oer to contribute to costs of putting the birds up else where while you treat the flat as lets face it do you really want to be covered in fleas and have you your flat mates and fur baby suffering from the itch and bite

Hi GoldyCat- I know there seems to be a lot of controversy on some of the essential oils and garlic- however, it is mixed.  My vet has approved these and I have been using these products for over 15yrs without any issues. 

So, I am well aware of the studies on various products/herbs and remedies.. I have worked with animals in various fields of the animal world for a very long time- and it seriously varies as to what is dangerous and what is not.  Also, all things I do are in moderation..I am not pouring clove oil on my cats or dogs, nor, am I feeding them raw garlic- there is a big difference.  I know that these products work for me and my animals and I would suggest anyone who is leary of these products to talk to their veterinarian and do some research, also watch you pets with the product to make sure they do not have a reaction... The products I use are pet products and made for cats/dogs- and in many cases made for farm animals and people by the same companies (just cheaper if you buy the farm animal product).   I know many of the flea/tick products chemicals that are being discussed in this thread- have actually harmed or killed pets in the recent past- due to contamination and bad batches...so pet owners have to be very leary of those, as well.  According to my veterinarian there are "fakes" of many of these products being made- and being sold..The only safe place to purchase is a veterinarian or if you have contacts at the company that produces it.  ...

So research, research, research... for a happy, healthy pet.

Good points. Before using any product, whether it be an herb or chemical, do your research and then talk to your vet. After all, if the cat gets sick from it, the vet is the one to treat ir.

I had the worst flea problems w/my cats and Frontline just wasn't working.  I have a small opening under my front door (I have an apt on the 2nd floor) and some local apt cats like to sit in front of my door because I think they smell my cats inside.  Hence how they got the fleas I'm sure, because they don't go outdoors.  I tried Apple Cider Vinegar as recommended but that didn't work, so I bought the Advanage II and it works fantastic!  I also use the cat wipes that you can p/up at your local pet mart and they are great!  I can't bathe my cats so the wipes keep them nice and clean and smooth.    Best of luck to you!

On the topic of the financially attractive idea of splitting a large dog dose among multiple cats, I spoke with my brother in law who is a vet, and he advised to be very cautious about this:  you must be able to very exactly measure the doses and not simply estimate - too much medication can kill a cat.

I wouldn't recommend splitting a dog's dose to anyone. Many people don't know the exact amounts to give or don't administer it correctly. If you're that desperate to save money, do your research first before you mess around with splitting drugs.

Well obviously people shouldn't estimate it. My vet provides a kit that includes a small tube to put the flea medicine in. I snip off the top and then pull the appropriate amount out for the size of the cat. The vet...helpfully an actual graduate of a vet school....prints the instructions on the bottle that holds the kit.

Well it's not obvious to some people. I've had a lot of customers try to buy the dog doses and when I ask how much their dog weighs, they say it's for their multiple cats. I ask how they split it and they say they estimate (ie. one squeeze purr cat).

The scary part is just that uneducated people can get it wrong.  You cannot use most medications marked for dogs on cats.  Frontline and Advantage are the two I know of.  Both are very safe and using a little more than the standard dose is unlikely to make the animal sick, whether it's a cat or a dog.  I have always measured with a 1 ml. syringe.  Bayer's Advantage II  cat doses range from 0.23 ml (kitten dose) to 0.8 ml. (large cat dose) with average cats getting .4 ml.

Theirs is based on an average weight between the two numbers, so a 9 lb. cat could get .4 ml OR .8 ml.  At our rescue, we have broken it down even more.  Also, even though it is generally used once a month, it is safe to use as often as once a week when cleaning up heavy infestations.

Well obviously people shouldn't estimate it. My vet provides a kit that includes a small tube to put the flea medicine in. I snip off the top and then pull the appropriate amount out for the size of the cat. The vet...helpfully an actual graduate of a vet school....prints the instructions on the bottle that holds the kit.

You can buy kits like that online. I don't remember exactly where I saw them, but the price per cat is about one third of the individual tubes.

Advantage, Revolution and the like are highly toxic and should be totally avoided.  There is a Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth (DE) called perma guard made by Agrogreen.  I suggest doing a search for it and their web-site is excellent, providing you with information on what it is, how it works, how to use it and all it's applications.

I have also found that vacuuming, while sort of pain to do repeatedly, can be effective. You have to do it a few days in a row, it seems. The first run through gets rid of the adults, but then stirrs up the eggs (gross) and then you have to keep doing it. When Advantage/Frontline first came out, the fleas would just fall off my cat. With this generation of cats and who knows how many generations of fleas, it isn't as super effective. In the Pacific NW, where it hardly ever gets cold enough to destroy fleas outdoors, the flea thing is a problem even with cats only being indoors.

I'm not sure how effective shampooing the carpet would be, but if you already own a shampooer might try that too.

My vet told me that simply vacuuming every day for a week does as much to stop the cycle as any amount of chemical/topical/adding to their food.  The cyclonic action of the vacuum itself does the trick.  I imagine steam cleaning your carpets might help, too.  I have hardwood floors, so I have to rely of my handy-dandy crevice tool.  Talk about a pain!

One Vet we have used sells the large dog Advantage with a syringe and instructions for cats. He also says to cut the empty tube and put it in the vacuum cleaner bag to kill the eggs you vacuum up.

There is no reason not to use dog meds for cats if the ingredients are the exact same thing and you can accurately measure the dosage.

People who tell you not to, either think you are too stupid to dose correctly, or are trying to sell you the cat version so they make more money.
