Flea dirt or skin issue

Hi - new here:

I have two cats with this grainy, black stuff in their fur on their backs. It drives them crazy trying to clean it and scratch. I didn't see any fleas, but treated them for fleas with Advantage II. How do I get the stuff out. I can't bathe them. They have long sharp claws and will tear me up.

Can you take them to be groomed?  Sounds like they need bathing and nails trimmed.

I had to bathe mine to get rid of the fleas. I used a couple of drops of dawn dish soap in the water and then rinsed him real good. Have you used a flea comb? The stuff unfortunately might not come off without a bath.
