Hey,
I guess this is sort of an offshoot of earlier UTI threads, but thought I'd go ahead and post, as I couldn't find any info specifically about it...
I know that fish is bad, especially for males, and most-especially for male UTI-prone kitties. That said, I have such a kitty, whom I switched off of EVO dry to SD Rx dry, and now to Nutro Max dry. I'd like to be able to integrate some of another higher quality dry, but it seems that most of them contain fish (or those that don't have percentages that are too high for UTI-friendliness).
That said, I was looking at Wellness, as my local petco just started carrying it.... It's crazy expensive, but IMO, the ingredients look better and it has higher protien and fat percentages than Max.. (it's supposedly been reworked somewhat to be more urinary tract friendly...) The percentages seem close to Max as well (in magnesium and ash).
Here's the ingredients of Wellness adult deboned chicken:
Deboned Chicken, Chicken Meal, Rice, Ground Barley, Ground Rice, Chicken Fat (preserved with mixed Tocopherols, a natural source of Vitamin E), Natural Chicken Flavor, Salmon Meal, Chicken Liver, Cranberries, Tomato Pomace, Olive Oil, Chicory Root Extract, Cranberry Extract Powder, Cranberry Fiber, Flaxseed, Potassium Chloride, Vitamins (Vitamin E Supplement, Niacin, Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C), Thiamine Mononitrate, Calcium Pantothenate, Riboflavin, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Beta-Carotene, Vitamin A Supplement, Vitamin D-3 Supplement, Folic Acid, Biotin, Vitamin B-12 Supplement), Choline Chloride, Minerals (Zinc Proteinate, Zinc Sulfate, Iron Proteinate, Ferrous Sulfate, Copper Sulfate, Copper Proteinate, Manganese Proteinate, Manganese Sulfate, Calcium Iodate, Sodium Selenite), Yucca Schidigera Extract, Dried Kelp, Chondroitin Sulfate, Glucosamine, Hydrochloride, Lactobacillus Plantarum, Enterococcus Faecium, Lactobacillus Casei, Lactobacillus Acidophilus, Taurine, Rosemary Extract
Guarenteed Analysis:
Protein (min.) 36.0%, Fat (min.) 18.0% Fiber (max.) 3.0%, Moisture (max.) 11.0%, Ash (max.) 6.5%, Magnesium (max.) 0.098%, Vitamin E (min.) 300IU, Taurine (min.) 0.20%, Omega 6* (min.) 3.5%, Omega 3* (min.) .45%, Total Micro-Organisms* 80,000,000 CFU/lb.
For Comparison (Nutro Max chicken)
Chicken Meal, Corn Gluten Meal, Wheat Flour, Ground Rice, Poultry Fat (preserved with mixed Tocopherols, a source of Vitamin E), Ground Whole Wheat, Natural Flavors, Chicken, Yeast Culture, Potassium Chloride, Salt, Menhaden Fish Oil (preserved with mixed Tocopherols, a source of Vitamin E), Choline Chloride, DL-Methionine, Taurine, Zinc Sulfate, Dried Cranberry, Ferrous Sulfate, Vitamin E Supplement, Inosotol, Niacin, Copper Sulfate, Ascorbic Acid (source of Vitamin C), Manganous Oxide, Riboflavin Supplement (source of Vitamin B2), Potassium Iodide, Calcium Pantothenate, Vitamin A Supplement, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride (source of Vitamin B6), Thiamine Mononitrate (source of Vitamin B1), Dried Blueberry, Biotin, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Menadione Sodium Bisulfate Complex (source of Vitamin K activity), Folic Acid, Sodium Selenite.
Crude Protein (minimum) 32.00%
Crude Fat (minimum) 17.00%
Crude Fiber (maximum) 3.00%
Moisture (maximum) 10.00%
Ash (maximum) 6.50%
Linoleic Acid (minimum) 3.50%
Magnesium (maximum) 0.085%
Zinc (minimum) 200 mg/kg
Vitamin E (minimum) 150 IU/kg
Taurine (minimum) 0.16%
Ascorbic Acid (minimum)* 18 mg/kg
Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA) (minimum)* 0.05%
Also, should I be avoiding adding some grain free dry (i.e. EVO or CORE) to my non-UTI prone male cats' diets because of the fish content? I will not be going all grain free dry again, but I was wanting to mix some into the dry that my other kitten (~17 months old now) is getting because I'm not satisfied with Max's protien and fat content for him.
Here's the first few ingredients of CORE:
Deboned Turkey, Deboned Chicken, Chicken Meal, Whitefish Meal, Potatoes, Salmon Meal...
I had fed some Taste of the Wild dry to them as well and they liked it, but it, too, has fish...
Thanks for any/all input folks!
