FB is not "secure" and "private" even with proper settings. Things can and have changed at any time, leaving your information out there in the midst of the changes. Also, accounts have been hacked before. The site takes your personal information and makes ads that match with that information too.
It always makes me uneasy when people with like 600 plus friends post when they are going out of town for 10 days for a wonderful beach vacation, leaving their huge house empty. I would worry about those type of announcements with that many people, many local. It just pays to use common sense in general when on the site.
It is fun however to stay in touch in people and it is entertaining. As a good rule of thumb just don't post anything you wouldn't want to tell the world on there. There are news reports all the time from people finding things that the page owner did not intend to share.
