The information about dosing was also interesting. Apparently clinical benefit has a VERY wide range, and is really kitty-dependent. The range is 100,000,000 (one hundred million) to 450 billion CFU (colony forming units). It has been suggested to use a probiotic strain that has been isolated from the same animal species that it will be used in. The theory is that a host specific probiotic may be better adapted to its target organism (e.g., stomach pH, bile acid composition, adherence to epithelial cells). However, several in vivo and in vitro studies have shown that human or diary derived probiotic strains are capable of conferring a health benefit across animal species. At this point there is no proven benefit of using a canine or feline specific strain.
