Oh have a wonderful time! NYC alone is worth a US trip. (just remember, NYC is not indicitive of the US as a whole).
Whenever I'm going on a trip I get Access travel books from the library.
They are great for the maps alone, and they list each section of each place and noteworthy restaurants, sights, etc. I highly recommend getting them before you leave - plus they are great to read on the plane.
