I worked tonight, as I knew I would end up doing.

I wonder something... if more people would just make the effort to go to bed an hour earlier each night, how much power would be saved? And, considering that most people in developed countries aren't getting enough sleep (and that constantly being deprived of sleep is detrimental to one's health) - how much would that help overall public health?

Kieran said he was doing "Earth hour" at 4am to 5am! But I totally agree with you

I predict this whole thread might be moved to IMO?

There is so much more behind Earth Hour and how it effects the entire world. We'll definitely see what is accomplishes on a socialist level after the climate change meeting. Additionally, I am just so sick of others romanticising gimmicks like Earth Hour, which is nothing more than a "one hour penance"*. When it comes to saving the earth, saving the starving, the homeless, those dying of treatable illnesses, etcetera - not to mention with Garbage Island (that is twice the size of Texas) still gathering in the Pacific Ocean - "it's the thought that counts" does not apply, makes no difference and does not save lives. If someone really wanted to accomplish all of those things, they'd be taking up a 100% pro-active lifestyle, living unselfishly - rather than unnecessarily - every day, not 'sacrifice' a simple hour & then resume our daily lives.

Turning on all of my lights was simply a demonstration of protest just like Earth Hour is a protest. And while the demonstration ended after an hour, my pro-active protest will never end, just as no one elses' should when they feel conviction for their own particular beliefs.

*This is the best article I've read thus far that really hits the nail on the head: http://nebuchadnezzarwoollyd.blogspo...-gimmicks.html . It's a very good to-the-point read!
Total gimmick! How many hours in a year?? Global warming has been a problem for 20 years but we are now just starting to do something about it?? Where was "carbon printing" or whatever, 20 years ago? Now, when it is at dangerous levels, we start doing something about it.

I already do my part when I turn off lights when I leave a room. I turn things off when I'm not using them. Maybe the corporations with their huge buildings could turn off the lights at night. It's not so airplanes won't run into the buildings, that's what those little red lights are for.

Do we really need the eiffel tower lit up at night?

Why don't we have "plastic bottle hour"? 1 hour out of the year, everyone recycles plastic bottles.....

Like I said....gimmick.

It needs some lights. I can honestly say I wouldn't want to be in a plane flying over at night if all the monuments had no lights on them at all.

But then they couldn't sell post cards with night time shots of a lit up Eiffel Tower!

When I lived in St. Ignace, I always liked looking out at the Mackinaw Bridge all lit up at night - but that's different since people do use it at night.

I didn't participate. I believe in conservation but I don't buy the whole global warming thing. Don't the 10-12 hours the lights are off when I'm not home every day count for something?
