Hi everyone! I am new to this forum, and also a new cat owner and I really need help.

My cat, Bat, is 8 months old and was spayed at the end of September.

About 1 week later, I noticed some raised lesions on her ears and she was trying to itch (with the E-Collar on). I got her into the vet within a few days, and they used the woods lamp and it was negative (but only 50% of dermatophytes will illuminate). So she got an antibiotic injection.

There was no improvement within 3 days, and the vet did not want me to come in because they were sure the injection would work. I had to advocate for a fungal culture myself, and I am still waiting on the results. The vet mentioned it might be pemphagoid, which is scary but for reasons I am not going to get into I don't really trust what they are saying.

My poor cat is so itchy, and the lesions do not seem to be improving. She has been in the E-collar for 1 month now and is miserable. Any advice is appreciated. I am so desperate for answers, and I have gotten almost no where with multiple vet visits. Thank you so much in advance!

PS - I attached the progression of the R ear, which has been the biggest problem - the rash is on both, with some involvement on the back of hear ears as well.

I am not that familiar with pemphagoid but know it is an autoimmune disease and there are treatments for it, and antibiotics aren't really what they are. If it is this, and it seems that your vet just sort of threw it out there, it needs a higher end treatment.

This may not be convenient depending on where you live, but the medical records are your property and you have the right to take them and go to another vet. Is there a cat specialist locally or any other resources for you to use? The ears do look painful.

Hi! Thank you so much for your response.

I 100%agree. There was a lot wrong with what the vet said/did. Antibiotics will not treat pemphagoid or ringworm, so I genuinely do not understand what the thinking was there.

I definitely am out of this vet the second I get the fungal culture back... but since they are still currently treating her I feel I should wait to get a second opinion? The vet recommended a Derm vet if it can't be figured out, which I will do. I have just spent thousands already and I am hoping the vet just overlooked something obvious :(

Welcome to TCS! :wave3: I'm glad you joined the site and came here for advice. I'm sorry to hear your 8 mo. old cat, Bat, is having a health problem that is affecting her ears. It could possibly be a systemic issue. I agree that you should consider getting a second opinion. A veterinary dermatology specialist would be a good option but since you are planning to switch vets you may want to go that route first.
Here's an Article that discusses skin conditions in cats which may be helpful: Skin Conditions In Cats – TheCatSite Articles

Best of luck, please keep us posted on Bat's progress. :alright:

Hi there!

Thank you for your response :)

Thats a great idea seeing the potential new vet before moving on to derm. Feels like the little push I needed.

I will surely keep y'all posted :hearthrob: Hoping its a "it gets worse before it gets better" type thing
