Try creating a NEW file first. You still click the Open button then create a new file. You will then get a blank square, if yo uuse the default size. Then start playng around with it. Make it whatever colour you want, by using the paint bucket tool. Pick your colour. Then start playing around with what you have. Maybe take the brush tool and splash some colours on it, and see what you can do with the filters. You just have to paly around until you get familiar with it. Don't try to make a signature at first. Get the feel of the program.
