I've only had the flu once during a bad year and when I had my first and only flu shot. So, I think the flu shot got me sick for the three days I was in bed.

My work gives free flu shots to employees and their spouses, we got ours two weeks ago. I also just received a check for my unused sick days from last year. I rarely use sick days, I get the flu shot. I've never gotten sick after the shot and there is plenty of vaccine this year, so please don't NOT get one thinking about others, there's enough for every one.

Last time I got a flu shot I got the flu
seriously. I haven't had a flu shot in 7 or 8 years and only once did I get the flu. My excuse for that was the place I worked at. The ventilation system had dark things coming out...you could see the black on the ceiling tiles.

when I worked in that building that was the most I was ever sick in 2 years since I was a kid. Most of us were sick though and the landlord or management didn't do a thing until we moved offices...however no one put things together until we moved.

Oh and I suppose I should knock on wood

*knock knock*

I've been getting one for years because I have problems with allergies.

Though the flu shot may not prevent getting the flu, it should reduce the severity of the symptoms.

Kids? I get upset about needles which is half the reason I'm not getting one!!!!

I've also got a good immune system and never get the flu - I only get head colds and they rarely last long.

Yep, got mine yesterday. I never used to get the flu, until about 2 years ago. It was awful, and I have NO desire to repeat the experience!

The weird thing is: my dr's office didn't make us pay for the office visit! I've never heard of that before. I had to pay my $5 co-pay last year.

I think everyone who is medically able to receive a flu shot should get one. I'll tell you why: the world right now is at a very high risk of an Avian Influenza ("Bird Flu") pandemic in the next few years. This type of influenza has NO vaccine; and NO cure, and about a 50-60% fatality rate. Yes, only about 400 people in Asia have died in the past 10 years; but, historically, we're are far overdue for a major flu pandemic, like the 1918 "Spanish" Flu pandemic, which may have killed up to 100 million people over the last part of 1918 through 1919. All this virus needs to do is mutate again, to enable easy human-to-human transmission (which is thought to have happened in 2 circumstances since 2004). And flu viruses LOVE to mutate/reproduce; they make bunnies look like amateurs. The WHO (World Health Organisation) website says we're at stage 3 of 6 stages to a pandemic; the next stage would be easy human-to-human transmission, and that's when the fun begins for humankind. It won't be pretty, should that happen.

No, the seasonal flu shot will not prevent nor help Bird Flu. But, my theory is: they can both circulate at the same time; theoretically, you could (though it's unlikely) have both at the same time. Or, more likely, you've just survived one, only to have the other flu take advantage of your low resistance--and THAT could kill you.

I'm not trying to whip up panic (oddly, this word is the root word of "pandemic"). But, I wish more people would read up on the Avian Flu threat, and educate themselves, and prepare for it. The theory is that, should this happen, it will sweep through in 3 waves, as most pandemics do, over 1-2 years. This means a great deal of the workforce will either be dead, or too sick to work. This means not only the paperboy/girl, but also those folks who run the electric plant, public water, truck drivers who deliver our food to stores, you get the idea. Please take this into consideration, and think seriously about stocking up sensibly, so you and your family can live comfortably should this happen. Even if you and your loved ones escape this flu, the social infrastructure most likley will be severely impacted for quite some time.

I hope I haven't scared anyone. I'm just laying the facts on the line for you to think about. You DO have control over this situation, if you plan for it now, so you don't need to be scared.

Flu Wiki is an excellent forum of "flubies" (such as myself), who research Bird Flu, and discuss it--TONS of excellent info over there! (Make sure you get into the "new" forum, not "Old Yeller", which is the old version (named as it has a yello background).

Stepping down from the soapbox now...

Didn't you say you had heart trouble? You are one of the people who really should be getting the shot. I have a strong immune system as well, but I really hate being sick. I'm one of those germ freaks who washes everything a person with a cold touches. I HATE colds or anything even close to a cold.

If you don't watch them give you the shot, you won't even know they're doing it. They have to tell me it's over. I don't even feel it.

I get the shot free at work and try to get it every year. Other than being miserable while ill, I simply cannot afford to be sick. I take public transportation every day so I'm exposed to a lot of germs. Plus, I have asthma and allergies, yippee.

Edit: the shot is painless, honest!

Not completely correct, as one person can verify on this site, vaccinations can make you sick. And, NO, I am not saying someone will get the flu from it (before anyone tries to misquote that...), but that people can get sick from reactions to the vaccinations. Most likely all the people that are thinking they got the flu from the shot are having some sort of reaction.

I've also read of "bad batches" that really messed people up...so I'll be skipping any unnecessary shots, I don't need the risk that whatever I'm dealing with now (currently undiagnosed) could react badly to it or trigger something worse.

Hope,

Thanks for posting this--I have friends with asthma, and their specialists INSIST they get both a flu shots, and the pneumonia shot (that one every 2 years). Pregnant women should also get a flu shot, and the elderly. I just wish I could get my Mom to get one (and she's a former nurse, yet, and a heavy smoker, but will she get one? Nope.)

Honestly, guys, the shot only takes a few seconds, and doesn't hurt. You don't have to look, either (this from a woman who's petrified of big bridges; and, when someone says, "Just don't look down", I reply, "But I KNOW I'm on the bridge, even if I don't look at it!", so who am I to lecture you about a needle phobia?!!?

my doctor MADE me get the flu and pneumonia shot this year. I'm on a high dose of prednisone for 3 months for sarcoidosis. Pred weakens the immune system and didnt give me a choice and said i HAD to have them. The only thing I'm wondering about now is the pneumonia shot, the nurse said it was good for 5 years but everybody here is saying 2....help?!?

It can be dependent on the brand of shot given. The one you had may have a efficacy of 5 years.

You have Sarcoidosis, that is what I had, that hurt my lungs, the three month treatment didn't work, so then i had a nine month higher dose of prednisone, that didn't work so then i had an even higher dose for 2 1/2 years, what a nightmare. Just nice to know I am not the only one

I won't be getting the flu shot. I hardly ever get that sick anyways. I did get the flu shot one year (forgot how long back) and got pretty sick about a day after. Whether or not it was from the shot I don't know but it was enough to stop me from ever getting another one.

About 2 years ago my middle son had the flu. I was the sole person taking care of him and cleaning up after him while he was sick. I did not get sick from it.
