Hi, I am new to everything cat! We have always had dogs, and was not looking to expand our family with a kitten, but in January my daughter rescued Dixie from the mouth of a dog on a farm. We estimated he was about 2 weeks old (his eyes were open, but not his ears). How could we resist trying to save this little feral kitten? So she brought him home, much to my trepidation, as we have 7 Great Danes, who do not know cats at all! After couple of days, we noticed Dixie has a softish lump on his side. We took him to the vet, who informed us that it was a hernia, probably caused by the dog who found him. It seems that the hernia is really large, spreading from his left side, just above his left back leg, to the groin area next to the leg. At first I thought we'd rear him until he'd be old enough to adopt out. But with his health issues, I know that no-one would want to take in a kitten that is going to require a major operation in a few months time. So it looks as if Dixie is here to stay! Much to my delight, it seems that the Danes are not interested in eating him, and are very curious about this cheeky critter, although they tend to be a bit rough in their nudging of him and very wary when he goes towards them! Although I am used to dogs and puppies, I am very new to bringing up a kitten, so Google and I are working very hard on kitten issues. Today, Dixie is about 6 weeks old, and seems to be thriving, although I do have some concerns, so you will see regular pleas for help on the other forums.
