We have 3 cats from 9 to 16 years old who have been displaced since our home was damaged by a tornado July 10. They have been staying at our sons home until our house is finished. Skooter the youngest is not taking to the change very well. She rarely comes out to see us when we visit them. We are concerned once they move back in to their new home there may be some behavioral issues with her since she will be adjusting to new surroundings all over again. Any suggestions?

I am so sorry that your house was damaged, it must be a very stressful situation. It sounds like your cat is feeling the stress some things that may help would be to buy a feliway diffuser which helps to calm a lot of cats. Some useful homeopathic remedies to help combat stress in cats are rescue remedy and spirit essences which is what Jackson Galaxy uses in his show and they are specially formulated for cats (http://store.jacksongalaxy.com/category-s/1849.htm).

I think play is also helpful for stress and trying to get her to play with a wand toy a few times a day should help her.

Once you move, limit any new activity. Get all the carpentry, painting, etc. done before you bring the cats home. This will help ease their adjustment. If you must do those things, give the cats a room of their own until the hub bub dies down.

In fact, give them a room of their own, with all their supplies (litter, food, beds, hiding places) for a week or so after the move. It will help them readjust to the new digs. Good luck and so glad you all survived!

We were considering blocking off the upper floor for a couple of weeks until she adjusted. She will be limited to 2 rooms on the lower floor. Hopefully she will adjust soon after so we can have her with us at bedtime. She was so accustomed to sleeping with us.
