I noticed that most of the spats between my young male cat and my senior female cat start with the younger cat following the older cat too close (with his nose close to her behind). If this were dogs, I would think it was greeting behavior. I'm not sure what this behavior means from cats and if it's friendly or aggressive. I do now my senior cat doesn't particularly like it.

Cats like to sniff each other's buts sometimes. Though the cat getting sniffed may not appreciate it. My calm cat is fine getting sniffed unless my punk gets to close with his nose. Older cats often get annoyed with a kittens exuberance. She may just want space. A hiss or bop without claws is a normal way for her to teach the kitten some manners.

Thanks. I'm glad to hear that's pretty normal. I think my older cat probably is a little grumpy given her health issues. I will see if I can divert the younger cat when he does that.
