Some cats are more fastidious than others and will tidy up after their housemates. I used to have one cat who was bad at covering his messes and the other cat would wait, then cover them for him.

One of my girls went through a stage of never covering up her poop (it drove me nuts), but the other would go and clean up after her. The same kitty also periodically covers up the other's food (she just does the motion, there's nothing to cover the food with of course).
