Five yr old spayed Oriental Siamese mix with a couging , hacking rumbling in here throat for months, Have seen several specialist, many vets NOTHING to explain this often chronic cough,
She has had tubes every where, blood work, xrays, ct scan and I have a healthy cat !!!!! NOTHING to suggest WHY,
Sufii coughed so much in March that her lung go infected from the coughing,,,,, antibiotic cleared the infection but NOT the cough,
Many vets have seen her and also had a vet in interernal meds go over here inside and out, She is very healthy except for the cough,
Giving her marshmallow root tea, and often a bit of very old raw honey, Oftens stops the hacking for the night, All skin tissues inside her are beautiful and clean,
Has anyone else ever have this happen.? She is an indoor cat, now with air purifiers, etc Have eliminated more high carbs , eating quality canned cat food , Would love to hear some anyone who has or is going through this,

Appreicate any thoughts , as many vets are just shaking thier heads as to no clue,

Donna and Sufii

Hi Welcome!

Do you have carpeted floors? Other animals? A super vacuum that you use a lot?

Is her water filtered?

Your vet can try a consult with a veterinary school or other vet hospital for more help on what might be causing the coughing.

Have you taken a video of the coughing and shown it to the vets? Cats won't cough for a vet in the office.

Dry air can cause irritation which can cause coughing. Maybe give a humidifier a try?

I don't know with a radiant floor system if you also have an HVAC system? If you do, has the HVAC been checked and maintained and the vents cleaned? Mold and allergens can lurk inside the HVAC and are spewed everywhere when the system is running.

Cold the coughing be something genetic / breed related?

yes two major vet hospitals and said that they would have done all the same, Now for Tufts but I no longer have money as have spent LOTS , yes to video many of them, air purifier and dehumidifer keeps air correct as I have problems,

coughing started last march up till then fine as well as her parents and siblings who live many differert places ,,,,,, she is short haired and brushed frequently. the vets about a dozen of them have ruled out everything,,,,,,,,,,,

If someone else some where has encountered some thing like this ,,,,,,,,,,, would truly be wonderful to talk with you,,,,,,

thank you for all the concerns and questions,,,,,,,,,, Sufii and I apprecate all of this

We haven't had this same set of circumstances but we do have an asthmatic cat (who is a lynx point, our vet says Siamese cats and mixes tend to get respiratory disorders) who has two medications. She has a (preventive) inhaler for asthma and a transdermal ear cream for allergies. Her x-ray showed some signs of asthma (donuts) but not a lot. And of course allergies can be tricky to identify and diagnose. Ireland never had a lot of symptoms but the medicines have reduced them even more.

Have they ever prescribed an antihistamine for her? An allergy med (particularly something transdermal) is relatively easy to try, especially compared to an inhaler, and it can really help. Allergies can cause coughing even when things are pretty clean... I have allergies, too, and sometimes there's just no explanation.

Good luck, this problem sounds beyond maddening.

There's more to Ireland's story, of course, the short version of which is that she'd been "barbering" her fur, licking one hip clean. The vet prescribed the antihistamine cream for her then, in case she had an allergy that was making her itch. Once the fur grew back, I tapered her off the antihistamine. Several days after the antihistamine was gone, she started coughing. But the coughing was a little different from what I think of as her asthmatic cough. What I call her allergic cough isn't as deep and hacking; we can usually stop the allergic cough pretty quickly by rubbing/massaging her throat. Anyway, I took her right in to see the vet. Ireland's lungs sounded fine (she'd been using her inhaler, for preventing asthma symptoms, for almost two years by that time) but her head sounded congested. And of course she'd been coughing! And so we put her back on the antihistamine cream. And she's been on it ever since. She still gets small coughs but not very often. And they usually go away quickly. I'm very glad we put her back on the cream, particularly since (as you know, as a fellow allergic person!) allergy symptoms can be sneaky!

I mention all that just in case there's anything there that might sound familiar to you. I'll be interested to hear what your vet thinks!
