I hope you can help me.
My 15yr old girl is struggling with constipation for the 1st time. Her normal schedule is to poop every other day. The constipation began a couple of weeks ago. The first time I saw her struggling, she repeatedly went back/forth to her litter box trying to poop. She visited her box about 10 times in as many minutes. This went on for about an hour, and then she just kind of snapped out of it and was fine for the rest of the day. The next day it started again, so I took her to the vet. After doing xrays, we learned she was mildly constipated and was given 2ml of Lactulose 2x per day. She, like most cats, didn’t like the Lactulose so I thought Miralax would be easier to administer. The vet said to give 1/8tsp 2x per day for 3 days. Day 1 produced a normal bowel movement and nothing more for 2 days. By Day 3, she was straining constantly to poop, everywhere. After yet another vet visit and more xrays which showed a 70% decrease in stool in her colon, we determined that she was no longer constipated but that the laxatives were probably making her feel like she needed to go when she actually didn’t have to, and probably causing some cramping. We discontinued the laxatives and per the vet’s advice, began adding 1/4tsp of pumpkin to her food 2x per day.
She’s been on the pumpkin for a 6 or 7 days now and I thought we were returning to her normal schedule of a bowel movement every other day.
Today, she produced a small bowel movement this morning and another one this afternoon. Unfortunately after the 2nd one, she began the back/forth trips to the litter box trying to defecate even more. Then she began squatting on everything trying to poop (her beds, my shoes, the rug, etc). She even cried at one point, I think out of frustration. This went on for about 2 hours. She was also excessively licking her rectum. She finally got to the point of lying on my bed and straining to poop laying where she was, just like she did on the laxatives. After an hour of this, she finally snapped out of it, and is now acting normally. I’m wondering if the pumpkin could be causing the same problem as the laxatives in making her feel like she needs to go, when she actually doesn’t. I could actually hear what sounded like gas sounds while she was straining on the bed. Has anyone experienced this? Could you please share your advice? I’m scared and my vet isn’t helping very much.
