My long haired cat has had a bout of diarrhea and has stinky mess/matting around his bottom.  He's a large but fairly heavy cat who is usually pretty good about grooming but I don't think he can reach this.  He's also a feisty, hands-off cat "don't-even-think-about brushing-me type who is growling and striking out at me any time I make an attempt to clean it up.  He stinks so much we can't stand to be around him!  His last two stools have looked normal and a stool sample I took the vet yesterday didn't raise any concerns. He doesn't tolerate vet trips well either--very stressful on him.

Any suggestions on how to handle this that won't land me in the ER?

I'd clean it off, even if that means I have to towel him so he can't scratch and get away. Probably a two person job. Have one person hold him wrapped in the towel and the other person cleans him. I've spot cleaned the back end of my long haired cat before.
