My cat suffers from gastritis. Prescription is esomeprasol and gastro-entero diet (which refuses).

What could trigger this? Thank you!

Thank you, @ FeebysOwner FeebysOwner and @ mrsgreenjeens mrsgreenjeens !

My cat is better now, after 8 days of esomeprasol and changing food. He didnt vomit again so far. However, he is still a bit more lethargic than usual.

I was not able to feed him any diet, he is very stubborn (he is a cat, right? :-) ). I feed him Applawas, which for me is costly because my cat eats only two days from one bag, so I throw away nearly half :-(.

===

I was not able to find here the probiotic, but maybe I did not explore the market sufficiently.

can you shop the internet? You might be able to find S. Boulardi via the internet. That's how I got mine. Just make sure it doesn't have a bunch of fillers in it. Not sure of you can open up this page: https://www.vitacost.com/jarrow-for...VSR6tBh0E1gD3EAQYAyABEgL6sfD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds, but it a link to Jarrow Saccharomyces Boulardi + MOS, which is what another member uses for his cat who has a lot of digestive issues and his cat seems to love this stuff.

What do you mean he only eats two days from one bag? Do you fill up his food dish and let him free feed from it or how do you feed him? Is that Applaws a complete food? I know many of there foods are supplemental foods, not complete. Don't really know anything about their dry foods. I'm guessing they don't come in smaller bags? We may be able to help you with this issue of food waste if we can get more details.

Gastrointestinal or Digestive diets available in Romania our cats find palatable: Royal Canin, Hill's prescription or Science Diet, Purina EN veterinary diet. Royal Canin GI, with options for Moderate Calorie (ideal or overweight cats), High Energy (young underweight cats), and variety of dry/canned options, was our favorite for managing gastritis, and other GI disease. Stress and diet are big triggers, starting anywhere from 6 months to 16 years age in cats.

Unfortunately, gastritis returns. The vet applied a more aggressive treatment, with partial recovery - by now.

I am very concerned- turbulent days. :rolleyes3:

If I may ask you, how was your cat diagnosed with "gastritis"? What tests did your vet do to make him come to that diagnosis?

I had a cat who had digestive issues, threw up often. I took her to the vet who did a GI ultrasound. The vet diagnosed Gastritis and I was advised to give her Pepcid daily, special diet, which did seem to help initially.

Three months later, one day, cat refused to eat. Local vet could not restart eating even with fluids, meds.
Cat was referred for biopsy, where it was revealed she had Small Cell Lymphoma. Oncologist said Gastritis was most likely IBD, which then morphed into SCL.

Based upon my experience, I would stay on top of this "gastritis" issue, maybe requesting further tests to ensure it is indeed just "gastritis" not something more sinister.

I certainly understand your concern and wish your cat a return to good health!

Thank you for detailed answer!

A vet specialised in feline medicine. She was pretty sure on causes and treatment.
Certainly, I would love to double check, but not possible these days,
Now my cat eats 2 twospoons of dry food per day and turns to his normal behavior, except the night hunting time (he sleeps all night long).

Two spoonfuls is not enough food for an adult cat. Is he refusing to eat more than that?
My thoughts exactly. Additionally, an all wet diet is more soothing, not as abrasive to an already irritated stomach. I would do all you can to encourage more eating.

He eats one teaspoonful dryfood at a time, 2-4 times a day.

He does not eat wet food: mews to ask food and climb on my legs by front paws, goes to the bowl but does not eat the wetfood.

The vet told me to feed only prescription diet (both wet and dry), which I think is not as tasty as the regular one. My tomcat is very picky. It was my fault to feed him low quality wet food (DM brand)- the vet told me to stop doing that, otherwise the gastritis may return and aggravate.

His usual (and current) meal plan: one serving wet food in the morning, at will dry food rest of the time.

Strange behavior.

Now my cat eats almost exclusively wet food - one can at a day and one spoon of dry food.

He refuses to eat from the bowl, but eats directly from the plastic bag.

He shifts once a day from one brand of dry food to another, from diet dry foods.

He sleeps and does not eat during night - which is not normal for him, bur daytime he is the same as always.

I am totally confused.

I switched from a large bowl to a dinner plate :-). Works great! Thank you IndyJones IndyJones !

Still, cat is a fan of Purina Delicate - on which I have some doubts- but I cant move him to something else.

The bad news is that he now experiences a cystitis and a spasm - so pees only once a day. We brought him to vet and got some medication, including antibiotics and antispastics.

According to the vet, there are many other cats in this situation and they suspect the consequence of quarantine, all family members staying home all day long - which is stressful for the cat.

Apparently, gastritis is gone. After switching to Applaws wet food in place of supermarket food (he loves supermarket food!) and keeping only high-end brands for dry food, no significant event occurred (except the moment he indulged in a cooked chicken bone, successfully vomited in a couple of minutes).

However, after treatment of the gastritis and of the superficial bladder inflammation, my integer 4 years tomcat stopped marking and started to pee in the litter. He also sleeps night time, what never did. He eats and drinks as before.

Well, I am happy about this new behavior.
But it concerns me - I am puzzled: is this good or bad sign? I cant came to any rational explanation.

A new visit to the vets can only be scheduled in 2 weeks from now (coronavirus), remote assistance does not help in this case.

Any thoughts?

Thank you!

I interpret the new behaviors as a good sign. My rationale for this is that with the gastritis and the bladder inflammation under control, cat is less stressed, more calm. The change in diet to wet food and high end dry has caused less stomach irritation; he feels better now. Cats are more likely to mark when under stress. Therefore, no stress..no marking. Also feeling more calm now, he feels he can sleep at night, not roam.
I would continue what you are doing and monitor closely for any further changes.
