Hi all,

I haven't been on this site in years but I have a 5 year old male cat (Ramses) who is de-clawed but I was curious about the back claws. Should I have them clipped? Or if he has a scratcher, is that enough? I always thought that they were for the front claws, but maybe I've been wrong?? He's a skittish cat so I'm not sure clipping them will be a great idea....

Most cats don't need their back claws fussed with. You can look at them now and then to see if they're too long; sometimes older cats get thick claws that need help. But usually back claws are trouble-free.

Weird how back claws never seem to cause trouble. Why is that? Is it because they grow much slower like for human toenails?

I trim back and front claws, my cats are used to it as its a show requirement here.
I also trim all 4 paws on litters starting at 4-6 weeks

Back claws tend to be thicker and don't get the same sharp point of front claws
