Sorry for the long post, I just wanted to be very detailed in the hopes that someone can help me. Let me start off by saying that our cat is a lover of food. She loves to eat as much as we will give her. About a week ago she started to eat less. Maybe 50-65% of what she normally eats. On Friday she stopped eating completely starting at lunch. We took her to her regular vet office immediately for an emergency visit. She saw a new vet she hasn't seen before since he was the only one available. We told him to run any and all tests to find out the problem. Luckily, we have a really honest vet office so he ran only the tests he thought was necessary.
Our cat has a chronic problem with throwing up her food. On average she will throw up 3-5 times a week (we feed her 3 times a day so she throws up 3-5 meals out of 21). Because of this he thinks she has IBD (irritable bowel disease). So he prescribed her some medication, recommended a special food that her stomach wont reject and gave her some shots he thought would help. When she came home Friday we gave her some of the special food. She only ate a little bit (about 40% of what we gave). Luckily she has been drinking water but less of it.
Saturday morning I noticed her stomach was abnormally swollen. I gave her the wet food that the vet gave (the one she ate on Friday) and she wouldn't touch it. I gave her some regular dry food that she loves and she ate a few kibbles. In the afternoon she wouldn't eat anything we gave her. We tried 3 different foods and she wouldn't eat at all. The vet called for a followup and told us that her blood work came back perfect. Meaning her kidney, liver and everything else the blood work detects has zero abnormalities. When I told him about the swollen stomach (he thinks its gas) and not eating he said not to worry about it. He said to keep giving her the medication he prescribed and she would eventually start eating.
Its Sunday morning and she still isn't eating anything. Meaning she hasn't eaten anything since Saturday afternoon. She hasn't thrown up since Wednesday. So I don't understand if her loss of appetite is from IBD caused by vomiting; why hasn't she started eating? She is still swollen, seems to have less energy and is moving around slightly slower then usual. Otherwise she is behaving normally and doing what she normally does. Also she has only used the litter box to urinate since Thursday night. I know the doctor said not to worry but I cant help it. Is there anyone who can think of any reason why she may be acting this way? Should we get a second opinion from another vet if things don't improve by tomorrow? Could her intestine be blocked somehow stopping her from excreting her feces? Hence her not wanting to eat? The vet checked her stomach area by feeling with his hands but I feel like maybe that could be the reason.
