I need all your wisdom now. I have a 13 year old cat that has stopped eating. We have been to the vet 3 times in a month. She has perfect blood work and we just did abdominal x-rays and abdominal ultrasound which both turned up absolutely no findings. Both vets we have seen believe this is a reaction to stress.
Let me give you some background. For the last 15 years I have been at home most of the time. I have been self-employed and was able to spend a lot of time with the cats (we have 3). They are all very bonded to me as I am constantly holding & kissing and playing with them. My husband is allergic to them to a degree and although he loves them, he can't pick them up and hold them.
In March of this year my husband was downsized and is now home all day. I've had to pick up more work and am gone all day and part of the evening so our situation has turned upside down. That's why the vets think it's a stress reaction. The cats just don't understand what's going on. They've basically "lost" their "mom". They're all having some reaction to this mess but Mittens has stopped eating. She still comes to let us know when it's time for meals, but then she takes a few licks and walks away. DH went out and bought a bunch of new foods and treats to try to entice her, but she just won't budge. Their regular food is Natural Balance and Wellness canned food and Natural Balance dry for treats.
The vet prescribed Mirtazapine and we gave her the first dose yesterday. They said if she's not eating by Mon. we will need to start force-feeding or have an esophageal tube put in to feed her, otherwise we'll be dealing with liver disease.
Please help.
