MOD NOTE: merged threads

Enzo was recently diagnosed with IBD. I'm sure the proteins causing this are chicken and/or fish since that's all he's ever eaten. I'm trying turkey right now which he seems to like, but I can't get him to eat duck lamb or rabbit. I feel terrible giving him one protein for the rest if his life, even if I mix it up with different brands of turkey. Does anyone have any ideas? Or is he okay eating one protein? I also am having a hard time finding turkey treats. If anyone has any food recommendations I would greatly appreciate it!

Enzo was recently diagnosed with IBD with the likely culprits being chicken and fish. I'm scrambling to find things he will eat and turkey seems to be the only protein (I've tried rabbit, lamb, duck) I notice on a few treats I was looking at the send ingredient in the turkey treats was chicken meal. Would that be bad to give him? Also, he gets a supplement to prevent crystals in his urine. The first ingredient is digestive enzymes of chicken and fish. He would only get this twice a week. Would this be okay to give him?

Single protein diets are often the best way to control IBD. He'll get everything he needs from any complete food, so you have no need to feel bad about a turkey only diet.

I can't offer food recommendations as brands are different in the uk. As to treats - what about fresh cooked turkey? My guys go wild for it, and it's absolutely pure.

I'm sure others with more experience will jump in but it's good to find a few different proteins that he likes to help keep some variety in his meals as it is possible he'll get bored, or he'll develop an allergy to that new protein. Try different brands. What are you trying right now? Sometimes cats don't like one brand of rabbit, but they like another. Novel proteins like rabbit and duck are good, some cats like venison too.

IBD can be really tricky so if he's liking the turkey and doing well on just that, I'd probably stick with only turkey for a while and see if his symptoms will stabilize. Depending on how that goes, I might try adding in something else. I'd try to keep things simple, at least in the beginning.

What turkey foods are you feeding him now? (I ask only so I don't give you ideas you're already feeding!)

For treats, I'd highly recommend Pure Bits: you can get plain old turkey. Our cats love them!

I feel like this is going to be really tricky to find out if it's working or not because he only exhibited signs of IBD once in the form of vomiting for 4 days in a row. So I'm unsure as to how I'll be able to know if he's doing okay?

Great, thank you so much! I have been reading the ingredients and it is tricky. So many of them sneak in chicken or fish in some manner!

If he's eating well, pooping normally, maintaining his weight and showing no signs of nausea (lots of lip licking and swallowing) then he's doing ok.

Your vet can give you more advice as to the signs to watch for.

Right now I'm trying wellness, nutro, max cat and instinct. I'm still hunting for others!

If he's eating well, pooping normally, maintaining his weight and showing no signs of nausea (lots of lip licking and swallowing) then he's doing ok.

Your vet can give you more advice as to the signs to watch for.
Perfect, those are all good things to know. Thank you!

That's a great idea but he doesn't have many teeth so small crunchy bits are easiest for him to eat.

I feel like this is going to be really tricky to find out if it's working or not because he only exhibited signs of IBD once in the form of vomiting for 4 days in a row. So I'm unsure as to how I'll be able to know if he's doing okay?
Four days with not too many symptoms is a great start!

As @MomofMaxwell noted, it's really important to watch the food labels to be sure there's no fish or chicken in what you're feeding. (I'd probably also try to avoid all grains, too, since those are a common problem.) I'm also a big advocate of food diaries.

As for other foods. Hmm, you could try Merrick's turkey LID food: our cats like Merrick LID a lot and it's not super-expensive. It does have chicken egg product, though. I'll see what else I can think of!

As far as treat go, I would  NOT give him anything that says chicken, chicken meal, etc.  Same with the digestive enzymes.  I use Prozyme, which is plant based.

For treats you could use something like Wholelife, which is 100% freeze dried  turkey, like this:  http://www.chewy.com/dog/whole-life...fe&utm_term=&gclid=COLNxuOttsgCFQqSfgodnIsBvw  I think you can get turkey hearts this way too, and maybe turkey livers.  There are other brands besides Wholelife. I always buy the ones for dogs just because the price is better

Great, thank you! Is the prozyme meant to treat urinary crystals? I really need something to help with that and was hoping because it's such a small amount twice a week the chicken and fish digestive enzymes wouldn't cause too much of a problem.

MOD NOTE: merged thread

My Enzo was recently diagnosed with IBD. The vet would like to put him on hills z/d, while I would just like to switch proteins (his triggers are either fish or chicken) such as turkey. Could I do both? Or does anyone have any experience with the hills z/d?

A food diary is a great idea. I'm a little torn because he takes a supplement to prevent struvite crystals that he desperately needs that contains chicken and fish enzymes. He only gets a teaspoon twice a week. Do you think it would be okay to continue with that?

I don't know. I suspect that's a question for the vet!

Sometimes the realizations on food issues arrive pretty randomly (like our figuring out it was potato that was making one cat gassy and vomitous) but with our previous cat, it was the diary and a lot of label reading that helped. It wasn't much fun but reading the labels and learning more about ingredients was a real eye-opener.
