Hello! My close to 6yo male cat with neurological issues is acting completely traumatized/shut down after a vet visit a week ago.

He was completely normal (for him...he has neurological issues that affect the back of his body, making him chronically constipated and wobbly on his back feet, etc...he is on lactulose, cisapride, and gabapentin that has been managing his condition quite well)...and was just taken in to the vet for a normal check up, bath, and grooming.

His checkup came out everything being fine, but when he got back home he was a totally different cat. He was totally shut down, and breathing very quickly, not eating etc. He is always skittish and stressed after coming back from a vet visit, but this time it was worse than usual. I spoke to the vet and asked if they had given him any medication to calm him down for the bath/grooming, and they said no, but that he had been very aggressive during it, biting and scratching.

He was acting totally traumatized/shut down and breathing rapidly for about 2-3 days, and then slowly began to improve and was getting close to normal, but then yesterday he once again began acting traumatized/shut down, breathing rapidly, and not eating once again...basically exactly how he was after returning from the vet (which is not at all his normal behavior, and not at all how he was before going to the vet).

My question really is...does anybody have experience with a situation similar to this? Any advice on how I can possibly help my kitty feel better and more comfortable? At the moment he'll basically just plop down wherever i put him, is it better idea to put him somewhere quiet without much noise? Or on the bed close to me and my partner and our other cat? Should I take him back to the vet? I am very torn about this, because it seemed to be the process of taking him to the vet itself that caused this, so don't want to make it even worse! But at the same time, his breathing and not eating has me very nervous.

Any recommendations would be very appreciated!! Thanks!

I would put him someplace quiet to "recover". Can he get around the house by himself? I'm guessing by your description of him that he can, so if you give him his own quiet space, make sure he can come out if he chooses to. If he doesn't have a "hidey hole", you can make him one by just giving him a box turned on it's side with a blanket or towel over it to mostly cover up the opening, with something soft to lay on. We actually use one of our cat carriers and they feel safe inside it for some reason, but if you used that to take him to the Vet that probably wouldn't work for you.

I"m guessing you know he does need to eat, so even if you have to hand feed him every few hours, do that to make sure he's getting at least 2/3 of his normal calories. Is he panting? If so, he will definitely need to be seen again. If not, see if he gets better in his safe place.

I just wonder if the Vet isn't aware of what actually happened during his bath and grooming :dunno: Of course, I'm not aware either, but it sounds like something happened. Has he had a bath and been groomed before. If not, that simple task may have done it :frown:

When we adopted our present cat he was so badly matted that the shelter shaved him everywhere except his head before we brought him home. BTW, he's a Persian so long haired. :creampersian: Once his fur grew out which took awhile we brought him to a groomer we had used in the past for our dog. She is also a cat breeder so we thought she would take good care of him. He was in his carrier when we picked him up and when we brought him home he acted similar to your cat, e.g. lethargic, difficulty getting up stairs or walking and he kept his back end low to the ground. We brought him to our vet who is a feline specialist and after his exam she told us he has arthritis in his back. She also asked if the groomer used a noose to hold him still when he was groomed. I told her I had no idea but I know she has one there because I've seen it attached to the grooming table. Long story short, she told me to never go back there. She put him on Buprenex temporarily which helped alleviate the pain and she also recommended cold laser therapy.

I would make your cat as comfortable as possible but be careful if he's on your bed and wants to jump off in the middle of the night when you're asleep. The less noise the better but if he's consoled by being in the same room as you then that's what makes him feel more secure. I would suggest contacting the vet before bringing him in if you're worried about making him traumatized again.

Best of luck, please keep us posted on his progress. Sending special thoughts and healing vibes. :vibes::vibes:

Unfortunately my kitty deteriorated rapidly over the night, and we ended up taking him to an emergency vet who ran tests and determined that he had heart failure. We sadly decided it was better to put him to sleep rather than try to extend his life a few months where he would not be comfortable at all. Thank you all for your help. :(
