Cat pooping outside litterbox- spite?

Cats are fastidious in their grooming habits. I would interpret his behavior another way. He jumped on the table to get your  attention and he got yelled at. He was scooting for a reason and he needs help. Your post indicates how upset you are by his behavior and as you said -cats are smart and they know what they are doing. He senses it as well.

I thought my cat was pooping out of the box, but it turns out that she just flings it out occasionally while meaning to cover it. It's all very innocent.
